Dean and Professor of International Law

Professor Michael N. Schmitt assumed the position of Dean of the College of International and Security Studies in September 2008.

Dean Schmitt originally joined the Marshall Center faculty as Professor of International Law in 1999.  He went on to serve as Director of the Executive Program, Director of the Senior Fellows Program and founding Director of the Program in Advanced Security Studies.  From 2007 through 2008, he occupied the Charles H. Stockton Visiting Chair of International Law at the United States Naval War College , one of the oldest and most prestigious chairs at the college.

Dean Schmitt was the 2006 Sir Ninian Stephen Visiting Scholar at Melbourne University and a visiting scholar at Yale Law School in 1997-98.  Before joining the Marshall Center , he served 20 years in the United States Air Force, specializing in operational and international law.  Dean Schmitt is the author of many scholarly works on law and military affairs, which have been published in Belgium , Chile , Germany , Israel , Italy , Norway , Peru , Sweden , Switzerland , the Netherlands , the United Kingdom , and the United States .  He serves on the editorial boards of the International Review of the Red Cross, International Peacekeeping, the Journal of Military Ethics, the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law, and the International Humanitarian Law Series (Martinus Nijhoff), and was Legal Editor for the second edition of Crimes of War.

Dean Schmitt is regularly appointed to international advisory boards and expert working groups, including those on the Manual of the Law of Non-International Armed Conflict (International Institute on Humanitarian Law), Manual on the Law of Air and Missile Warfare (Harvard Program on Conflict Research) and Direct Participation by Civilians in Hostilities (ICRC).  A frequent speaker on the law of war, Dean Schmitt delivered the 2003 Waldemar A. Solf Lecture at the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General's School and the 2008 Hilaire McCoubrey Lecture at the University of Hull Law School.
